Dutch rap formation Zwart Licht will release their new Album ‘Leeroy Draait Door’ in BIRD on Saturday June 2nd.

Zwart Licht is a rap formation, consisting of producer and MC’s Hayzee Akwasi and Leeroy. In 2009 they made 180 degree turn from traditional rap with their debut album ‘Bliksemschicht’. In that same year they won State Awards for ‘Best Group’, ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Live Act’ in 2010.

Now they’re back with a new album, Leeroy Draait door, which will be released tonight at BIRD. On this album you’ll hear more about Akwasi and MC Leeroy will take a step back. The album is different from the progressive grime and dubstep tracks, for which they are known since 2009. It’s a real hip hop album, with recognizable neo-soul, electronic and jazz influences and fresh melodies.

365dagenkunst.nl is an artproject in which a group of artists show new work every day of the year. On april the first the website existed for one year. A good reason for a party and an exhibition. Not digital, but in reality. On the hand of a QR code visitors of the exhibition can vote for the works, just like on the website.

BIRD, one of the finest club for jazz, soul, hiphop, funk and new electronica, is not only great with music in an intimate setting, but also with events, food and drinks. While enjoying the fine menu and complete bar, you can enjoy performances of exciting national and international artists of this time. One of the exciting international artists is singer-songwriter Cody Chesnutt, who will perform on Thursday May 31st.

Cody Chesnutt is one of those a rare creative geniuses that you encounter every once in a while. It’s been almost ten years since his debut album The Headphone Masterpiece appeared and caused a storm in the music world. His breakthrough to a wider audience, however, came in 2002 when the Grammy Award winning band The Roots decided to use the song ‘The Seed’ for their album Phrenology.

Then it became a bit quiet around Cody. He made the album ‘The Live Release’, toured with the new songs but the album never came out. In 2012 he came with the EP Black Skin No Value, which was praised like The Headphone Masterpiece. This year there a full album will be released, Landing On A Hundred, which you can hear at BIRD. Expect an unique performance full of soul, funk, hip hop and rock.

One of the exciting national artists is Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira, who will perform for the first time with her solo project on Thursday May 31st.

The Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira was a bandmember of Bacán in the nineties and toured with the brazilectro formation Zuco 103 since 2000. Since Zuco 103 took a musical break, Lilian has been a frequent guest soloist at Metropole Orkest, Jah6, Mdungu and performs in serveral formations such as Rogerio Bicudo, Nomads and Caropa and she’s also working on a solo repertoire.

Lilian Vieira has her musical roots in the Brazilian Samba Soul movement of the seventies. The seventies were the golden years of creativity in Brazil, when greats such as Ceatano, Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia wrote their masterpieces. Also these were the years of dictatorship, which criticism on the government had to be expressed in secret. That’s how the music became the ultimate communication tool. There were a lot of experimenting with different styles of African origin and the identity of musicians in this fertile creative period. Thus, the groups Trio Mocoto and Banda Black Rio mixed funk with samba. The singers Elis Regina and Elsa Soares know their peak in this time of tremendous musical growth. Lilian Vieira brings her own interpretation of the Samba Soul, assisted by great musiciancs!

Strange Fruit is renownened for its groovy nights full of boogie, electronica, house, dubstep, UK Funky and progressive soul and hip hop. In other words: the best soulful electronica, where DJ’s and live acts seem to go perfectly together. This tradition will continue in BIRD on May 27th: Dâm-Funk behind the turntables.

Dâm-Funk is already working on a musical renaissance with music of the early eighties: boogie, modern soul and electro-funk. As a DJ and programmer, he draws boogie funk lovers to his famous Funkosphere.

The next phase of his musical mission is shaped by his debut album Toeachizown, which the West Coast tradion is continued effortlessly in Dam Funk’s own modern compositions. He knows how to create a whole new form of boogie with an arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines. One of the exciting international artists is THEEsatisfaction, who will perform on Saturday June 9th.

THEEsatisfaction consists of Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White. The two met at the Univerity of Washington, where they soon began making music together, music that they write produce and perform themselves. The girls also organized and financed their own tours and built a fan base throughout the United States with their unique sound and groove.

Before their first ‘official’ album came out, Stas and Cat dropped home made mixtapes, of which ‘That’s Weird’ from 2008 was their first. Last March they released their first official album through Sub Pop Records. Awe naturalE is filled with music that can be described as funky, psychedelic, feminism, sci-fi with the warmt hand depth of jazz and sunday soul, topped with ice cold raps that reminds you of Elaine Brown, Ursula Rucker and Q-tip. Yes. On June 9th you can hear how all that sounds in BIRD.

MIKE KOLDIN They appear at nightfall, when the first stars pop up and the sky turns orange and pink. This improvisation duo makes stunning, sad songs, for the end of the day. At night they’re known from bands like Eklin, Adept and Bonne Aparte.

EXTRA LIFE These art-rock provocateurs from Brooklyn (NY) are known for their minimalistic compositions. Perhaps you will recognize it from bands like Zs and singer Charlie Looker’s former band and the Dirty Projectors. Together with a bit of Morrissey, metal and medieval chant you have Extra Life!

Hell yeah! The month May brings us yet again the most beautiful music.

HERREK For us the ultimate climax of the last Motel Mozaiqe! Frontman Gerrit van de Ver, sings about his youth in Papua. Supported by guitar, song, keys and a little bit of synth, you’ll be gently rocked, with a few glimpses of what is happening above the jungle canopy.

MINUS THE TIGER The name of this band was refers to their dead cat, thus; Minus The Tiger. Anne Broekman and Maarten Besseling spent many Sundays on the couch with an acoustic guitar, looking for their own sound. The result is an electropop foursome which makes music balancing between melancholic and danceable. They compare it with bands like The Knife, Lykke Li and Kate Bush. A promise for a good night!

Travelling performance art festival Diverse Universe is coming to the Netherlands for the first time! 25-26-27 May in Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Rotterdam.

Diverse Universe is a nomadic performance art festival, that has taken place annually since 2005. The overall organization is in hands of the Non Grata Performance Art Group from Estonia. They work together with local organizations all through Europe. In May and June 2012, a group of artists travels to all locations. Local artists are invited by the organizations involved to join the festival.

The Dutch edition alone has become a province-crossing project with organization in hands of Extrapool from Nijmegen and Performance Art Event from Rotterdam, who invited Diverse Universe to come to the Netherlands. The festival has contributions from Artspace Flipside and Anet van de Elzen of To Be Present.
