An exhibition night featuring Lubok and Wouter Venema. Music provided by Vakantie and Elkin!

-Christoph Rückhaberle, Gabriela Jolowicsz, Sebastian Gögel / Lubok Verlag.
-Wouter Venema / Samlung Recordings

Lubok verlag

PrintRoom presents Lubok verlag, publisher of artists books located in the well-known Spinnerei complex in Leipzig.
Their focus is largely on the graphic arts and in their publishing they use graphic means of production. For the outstanding Lubok series, artist and publisher Christoph Ruckhäberle invites artists to make linocuts that are printed on a mechanical letterpress, which allows large editions. More than 140 artists participated in the Lubok series so far. Recently the 10th edition was presented and Lubok and PrintRoom are currently cooperating in producing the 11th edition.

Next to their activities in publishing Lubok is also important in putting contemporary printmaking on the map through the organisation of international exhibitions. During Art Rotterdam Lubok will partly transform PrintRoom partly into a zany coloured printed wonderland, using patterned wallpaper as a background for graphic work by artists Christoph Rückhaberle, Gabriela Jolowicsz and Sebastian Gögel.

In the books, work of Adam Dant, Tal R, Katharina Immekus, Volker Pfüller, Tobias Jacob, Julie Verhoeven, Mark Titchner, Matthias Weischer, Karl-Georg Hirsch, Simone Waßermann amongst many others.

Nomade

Wouter Venema is a Rotterdam based visual artist and musician. He has recently produced an artist book, titled ‘Nomade’ at the stencil workshop of Knust in Nijmegen. It contains an atmospheric series of drawings, suggestive of a loose storyline. As a recurrent theme, black holes dictate their logic (or lack thereof) throughout the ‘narrative’.
This event will mark the Rotterdam presentation of this beautiful B/W artist book.
For the occasion Wouter invites members from the bands Vakantie and Elkin, that are affiliated to his record label Samlung Recordings, to do two short sets.

the admission is free. _afterwards, visitors are requested to donate whatever amount they think appropriate for attending the performances. _the participating artists receive a fair proportion of the collected sum after the show (incrowd funding).

about ocw

ocw is a rotterdam non-subsidized small-scale stage initiated by the visual artist arnold schalks. _the objective of ocw is to create the conditions for cross-disciplinary connections by the combined presentations of visual arts, dance, music, literature, theater and cinema, offering a lot of room for the experiment. _’small-scale’ and ‘hospitality’ are the catchwords for the activities of ocw. _its indoor facilities measure up to 41 sqm.. _the theater space -a former classroom- seats a maximum of 30 visitors. _to extend the range of the programme, each series of contributions are repeated on three successive evenings.

about crimmp

crimmp_07 is the seventh of a series of performances in which reduction is interpreted as a surplus value. _’crimmp’ (= shrinkage) not only refers to the modest dimensions of the ocw-stage (w x d: 350 x 195 cm), but is also a declaration of intent to the concentrate. _initially, ‘crimmp’ sounds cranky and frugal. _shrinkage takes. _no matter how inescapable, not a soul wants to shrink. _at best, shrinkage forces one to see further than the end of one’s nose. _the kind of crimmp that ocw wants to accommodate is different: it gives. _this crimmp represents a form of generosity, just as crookedness can be understood as a form of straightness. _the six letters of ‘crimmp’ stand for: ‘creative reduction In the multi media practice’.

CINEMA PANIC! Oedipal fantasies, civil war and iconclasm!
At the end of the Spanish civil war, Fando, a boy of about ten, tries to make sense of war and his father’s arrest. His mother is religious, sympathetic to the Fascists; his father is accused of being a Red. Fando discovers that his mother may have aided in his father’s arrest.

Sometimes we witness Fando imagining explanations for what’s going on; sometimes we see him at play, alone or with his friend Thérèse. Oedipal fantasies and a lad’s natural curiosity about sex and death mix with his search for his mother’s nature and his father’s fate. Will Fando survive the search?

Arrabal was together with Alejandro Jodorowsky, joint founder of the Panic Movement. Inspired by Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty and Pan, the Greek god of nature (and also strangely enough, theatre criticism!) Jodorowsky and Arrabal sought to jolt Surrealism from the hands of petite bourgeoisie. Viva la Muerte was Arrabal’s oedipal, autobiographical and startlingly iconoclastic debut - a raw, yet never gratuitous exorcism of the Spanish War. We’ll screen a restored, specially imported 35mm print, it’s a must see.
