Calypso and the new cool kraak revival
Music theater about vacancy with the energy of a punk band. Calypso is about a generation that grew up in a time of luxury and wealth, and is confronted for the first time with an economic crisis. How does this influences their lives, values and ideals? To what extent can they learn from the past, and put it to use in their quest for a new and better life?
In the recently completed tower De Calypso in the center of Rotterdam, surrounded by vacant houses and offices, the public meets a group of “new squatters”.
One of them, a girl, grew up with a freezer in her house where her frozen father is lying, a squatter from the eighties. He is cryogenically frozen and wishes to wake up in better times. Now a new crisis has occurred, the daughter decides to de-freeze her father, hoping he can help her solve some urgent problems.
Lizzy Timmers puts two generations together: the old squatters versus a new generation urbanites. She did research on the squat and punk movement from the eighties and current initiatives like pop-up stores in empty buildings and little gardens on abandoned terrains. The ideals and ideas of the two generations are all included in the performance, an energetic mix of dance, music and theater.
