Calypso and the new cool kraak revival
Calypso projects an image of a generation that grew up in a time of luxury and wealth, and is confronted with their first economical crisis. How does this influence their lives, values and ideals? To what extend can they learn from the past to use in their quest for a new and better life.
Calypso & the new cool kraak revival Lizzy Timmers
Music theater about vacancy and romance, with the energy of a punk band.
In the recently completed residential tower De Calypso in the center of Rotterdam, surrounded by vacant houses and offices, the public meets a group of “new squatters”. Underneath them, there’s a girl that grew up with a freezer with her frozen father in it, a squatter from the eighties. Once he let himself freeze whishing he could wake up in a better times. Now that there’s a new crisis, the daughter decides to de-freeze her father, hoping he can help her solve some urgent problems.
Calypso projects an image of a generation that grew up in a time of luxury and wealth, and is confronted with their first economical crisis. How does this influence their lives, values and ideals? To what extend can they learn from the past to use in their quest for a new and better life.
Lizzy Timmers presents two generations: the old squatters versus a new generation urbanites. She researched the squad- and punk movement from the eighties and visited current initiatives like pop-up stores in empty buildings and little gardens on abandoned domains. The common ideals, old and new ideas from the two generations, Timmers includes them in her performance to form an energetic mix of dance, music and theater.
