De Unie in Debat is a partner of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2012 and will organize the Smart Talk series. Journalist Bas Heijne will discuss the films that are a part of the Signals program with directors, producers, artists and curators. For film fans looking for more depth and analysis. All evenings are free and start at 21h (January 31st at 20h) in De Kleine Zaal van de Rotterdamse Schouwburg.

On February 4th, we will kick off the new year with an XL edition of WAREHOUSE. Pakhuis’ sister concept, that aims at the true fan of pure music oriented parties. This Saturday is the last day of the infamous International Filmfestival Rotterdam, that always adds an extra something to the city’s nightlife.

In collaboration with Beeld voor Beeld (The Netherlands), ProAction Film (Syria), and ArteEast (USA), Dancing on the Edge presents a film program on Syrian cinema in De Unie.

On Christmas eve (december 24th), BIRD will cook up a special dinner where all aspects come together. A night with jazz, funk, soul, disco and a delicious four course dinner, including wines, in the intimate atmosphere of jazzclub BIRD. Our regular backing band The Fresh Cuts, led by Salle de Jonge, accommodates a number of top musicians from the Rotterdam music scene and brings along some special guests this evening.

The third edition of the Dancing on the Edge Festival, featuring inspiring contemporary dance and theatre performances from the Middle East and North Africa, will take place in five Dutch cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Groningen and The Hague.

This one-of-a-kind tea experiance will be held in a monumental and unique location, the old post office on the Coolsingel. From the 22nd till the 24th of december will all be about tea and about every lovely part that comes with it. Enjoy the only biologic high tea, shop at the cozy tea fair or get inspired during one of the workshops and demonstrations. Entrance is free.

Space Between is a new electronic music festival with two days of music, film and light-art. This takes place in jazz venue BIRD in the first weekend of December. Space Between brings the sound of today and the future to Rotterdam. Electronic, soul, beats, Detroit house, film and art are thrown in a blender with an eclectic and very danceable cocktail as a result.

The annual Image Festival Rotterdam offers a wide-ranging and substantial overview of all the aspects of the world of image and media. It is a meeting place for makers of images (graphic designers, animators, illustrators, photographers etc) and the people who are interested in the work, opinions and insights.

Friday the 4th of November 2011 the people of Rotterdam are invited to join a symposium on Literature and Society.

The second day of the Afrobeat special in GROUNDS! Afrobeat is a combination of jazz, Yoruba music, funk and highlife. One of the most important musicians in this genre was the Nigerian drummer Tony Allen. Tonight the energetic band Jungle By Night will perform with special guests Tony Allen and Woima Collective.

This weekend there is an Afrobeat Special in GROUNDS! Tonight ‘Can I Kick It’ presents a tribute to Fela Kuti. The ReFreshed Band performs with no one less than special guest Tony Allen. Also Akua Naro, DJ 360 and more guests will go on stage.

Exclusively for Soundpiece, sound artist Jorg Schellekens made the project En Plein Publiek.
