Duende: open studios, roundtable discussion & party
On the 6th & 7th of October, Duende will open its doors for one of the last times with a Salon exhibition, open studios and a 13 years survey of ‘Duende Aktiviteiten’. On the 6th of October there will be a roundtable discussion surrounding the current art climate, followed by performances, iPad and piano concerts, performances, the Fight Club, CigarBar & Party.
After 28 years the artist’s initiative Duende comes to an end on the 31th of December 2012. City Planners have other ideas for the building on the Tamboerstraat that since 1994 has housed 48 affordable studio spaces. The loss of the building leaves all its artists, designers, caterers, writers & architects forced to look different workspaces. Finding such a space in today’s cultural economic climate for such a diverse mix of practice and exchange is unrealistic. It also signals the end to years of artistic public programming Duende has initiated and contributed to the cultural life in Rotterdam.
This is the starting point for a (roundtable) discussion about Duende’s current location and future, the art climate in general, the consequences of closing multiple artists initiatives and artist related institutions throughout the city, and the position city politics is taking.
