Fri 20 January
Festival Amilcar Cabral
From the 20th to the 22nd of January, Stichting Fidjuz di Cabral is organising the “Amilcar Cabral Festival”. Locations: Dek22 and de Machinist in Delfshaven.
Heroes’ Day It is the Cape Verdean “National Heroes’ Day” on the 20th of January. This national holiday has been celebrated in Rotterdam for many years. On this day, the people who played an important part in the struggle for independence in Cape Verde are remembered. Up until now these celebrations have only been commemorated by Cape Verdeans.
A Short History Lesson What has remained relatively unknown is the important role that the Netherlands played in the struggle for Cape Verdean independence. Dutch nationals and Cape Verdean immigrants residing in the Netherlands contributed to the struggle in their own way. Cape Verdean immigrants participated in the armed conflict in Guinea-Bissau, and numerous Dutch doctors-in-training provided medical support to the injured fighters and inhabitants of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.
Cape Verdeans have held a reputation for being quiet immigrants for many years, and although most inhabitants of Rotterdam know someone from Cape Verde, we still know very little of the history and culture of this country. That is why we want to bring people from different demographics together to learn about our Cape Verdean culture through film, dance, talks from experts and much more.
Celebrate Together During the festival, films about the War of Independence will be screened alongside talks by people who played a part in the struggle, for example, as a doctor or a freedom fighter. Other social and cultural activities are included in the varied festival program.
Through the intimate Amilcar Cabral Festival, we want to reach a broad audience to increase awareness of Cape Verdean culture and history.
