František Škroup - A czech composer from Rotterdam
Concert by the Martinů quartet to commemorate František Škroup, former conductor of the Rotterdam opera. Free entry
František Škroup (1801-1862) is famous as the composer of the Czech national anthem Kde domov můj (‘Where is my home’), but it is little known that he had strong ties to the Netherlands. Škroup was conductor of the Hoogduitse opera in Rotterdam, composed an opera on the Dutch national uprising (Der Meergeuse (‘The sea beggar’)) and is buried at Crooswijk cemetery in Rotterdam. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of his death, the Czech Centre organizes a concert of the Martinů quartet, which will play several of Škroups string quartets.
