Prerequisite for a democracy is an informed population. Trough free press people know what is going on in politics and it helps them to make a sensible decision on how to use their right to vote: in this way the power is to the people!
But do people really have the power in our current democracy? Or do we live in the dictatorship of the media? In today’s media society, images seem to say more than content, the political game is played in terms of profit and loss instead of terms of policy and debate and the journalist doesn’t only has to fill his newspaper faster, he also has to keep his website up to date. The speed in which the press has to work, the demand from the audience for sensation politics and the rise of the Internet where images are placed out of context affects the information streams trough that the well-informed citizen.
Because of this LOKAAL organizes the lecture series “The Power of the Media. These master classes on media and politics make you think about the way you use media yourself and the influence the media is exercizing.
