Browsing Sessions

The artist book is our central theme this evening. Ten artists browse through their publications while explaining which choices they made and how the work came about. Each session takes about 5 minutes and will be recorded and projected simultaneously. After the sessions it’s possible to purchase the publications and of course we have some drinks. Welcome!

For two months, Showroom MAMA transforms itself into Laff Box: a comedyclub for contemporary visual and performance artists whose work explores the boundaries between comedy and contemporary art.

The last years of communism weren’t only gray and boring. Friday 2 October at 18:30 the exhibition The Prague Five will open in the Czech Centre in Rotterdam, an overview of the exhilarating, sensual and often hilarious work of five Slovak photographers who rocked the Prague art world of the 1980s.

Pecha Kucha Night: 20 seconds, 20 images

Come join us, socialize, be challenged and inspired by exciting, critical, touching, sometimes confusing but above all compelling presentations and unforgettable performances. A dozen designers, artists, musicians, politicians and journalists share their passion and dedication by presenting their idea in only 400 seconds using 20 images. Host: Jeroen Deckers.

Turkish photographer Halis Subasi is delighted to announce his debut exhibition, The Dutch Way, which presents the selected images of his impressions of the Dutch city of Rotterdam.

On Thursday 24 September, artists, curators and academics will examine the connection between Caribbean carnival and contemporary art. They will discuss the ethic, social and artistic perspectives of the carnivalesque, as a space and strategy for expressing traditions and cultures as part of our current ‘global village’. The seminar will be an assembly of mini-readings, performances and discussions with contributions by Artwell Cain, Nana Adusei-Poku, Charl Landvreugd, Vincent van Velsen, Marga Weimans, Mette Sterre, Jaleel Roy-Lindsey, Junadry Leocaria.

Kaus Band Event and Passengers Exhibition

Kaus Australis is happy to present the exhibition PASSENGERS spotlighting the work of our current Guest Artists, accompanied by the first ever KAUS BAND EVENT featuring four sparkling Dutch Bands. Join us for this special evening of musical and visual delight held in our hospitable, and unique location at Kaus Australis on Saturday September 26, 2015. Fresh drinks and warm food will be served.

Artist talk: An evening with Zin Taylor

During this informal artist talk, Zin Taylor discusses his interest in the extraordinary oeuvre of architect, theoretician, set designer, and sculptor Frederick Kiesler (1890-1965), which served as the departure point for his new work A Segment of Translation (F. Kiesler’s Mind Form) commissioned by Witte de With as part of the In Light of 25 Years program.


Laff Box

For two months, from September 2015, Showroom MAMA transforms itself into ‘Laff Box’: a comedy club for contemporary visual- and performance artists whose work explores the boundaries between comedy and contemporary art. With Laff Box, MAMA looks at the comedy club as a setting for performance and humour as a means of expression and cultural product.

Postwar Rotterdam: Art & Architecture

Monument Lecture by architecture historian Wijnand Galema and artist Toby Paterson.
Rotterdam city centre is rich in reconstructed architecture and art works. Reliefs and mosaics are beautifully integrated into the architecture. Examples are the colorful stained glass windows of Louis van Roode on the side wall of the former Station Post Office and the sculpture of Naum Gabo as part of the Bijenkorf department store.
