Subbacultcha!: Las Kellies + Wooden Constructions
Las Kellies is an all-girl trio from Buenos Aires - Argentina, mixing catchy garage sounds with dub and post-punk. Somewhere between the Raincoats, The Slits, Gang of Four and ESG. Party!
Amsterdam based Wooden Constructions blend together post-punk, new wave and afro-beat. You might have seen this insanely tight quartet on the DWDD, with of course their maniacal, Ian Curtish/David Byrnish, singer!
Las Kellies started in 2005 when three girls met at a gig in Buenos Aires, decided to form a band together, borrowed their friend’s amps and instruments and started cooking up a tasty racket. Perhaps as an homage to their cosmopolitan, European ancestry-packed home country of Argentina, the Kellies sing in Spanish, English, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Catalan and French. Their dub- and post-punk-inflected garage rock songs are as tightly packed with eclectic fillings as an empanada, as salty sweet as dulce de leche and as hot and spicy as mate, so bring your appetite!
The Wooden Constructions are here to save your life. This Amsterdam based post-punk quartet produce two-minute-something songs. Think early Gang of Four combined with vocal elements that remind of a young Mark E. Smith. In their own words: ‘If you don’t dance, we’ll beat you up’. Better bring a helmet.
