Kino Klub Goethe, a high quality film series of German cinema at the Goethe-Institut Rotterdam, returns in September with a screening of ‘Sonnenallee’. With an introduction by film expert Peter Bosma and a glass of German wine.

Ghibli’s *The Tale of the Princess Kaguya* avant premiere

Discover as one of the first in The Netherlands the new Studio Ghibli film by Japanese anime maestro TAKAHATA Isao! A prelude to the festival in October, CAMERA JAPAN and film distributor Lumière present an avant premiere of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. The film is Japanese spoken with Dutch subtitles. This month’s inspiring film at Kriterion Rotterdam, “Oil Rocks”, tells the story of the first and largest offshore oil-platform ever built, a vast city in the middle of the Caspian Sea, built by Stalin in 1949 and still operational.

Inspiring Cities, Inspiring Films The Oil Rocks (Marc Wolfensberger, 2009)

100 km off the coast of Baku in the Caspian sea, lies Neft Daslari, a network of oil rigs with a hotel, apartments, shops and sports facilities for 5,000 temporary residents, linked to over 200 km bridges. It was built by order of Stalin to provide the Soviet Union with oil, but it still functions to this day. The documentary, made for the 60th anniversary shows the imaginative life in this Italo Calvino-like city.
