Tinariwen

Saturday the 23rd of May 2015, BIRD, Motel Mozaique and Rotown will present the African desert rock band Tinariwen at Maassilo in Rotterdam. The group of Tuareg musicians received a Grammy Award in 2012 in the category Best World Music for their album Tassili. Their newest record, called Emmaar, consists of hypnotic Malinese blues and rock with a twist of psychedelic rock and roots rock.

World Music Session #5 Nor Achkar

From February till April the floor is shaking at Stroop! Every saturday the stage is given to upcoming talented musicians from Rotterdam, to play their wonderful sounds and take us to all different parts of the world. On the 7th of March we’re welcomed by the Anatolian, Kurdisch and Armenian sounds of Nor Achkar.

Benjamin Herman Trio & Daniel von Piekartz

On Thursday the 23rd of April, the Benjamin Herman Trio returns to BIRD. This time he brings the young and talented pianist and singer Daniel von Piekartz with him. Last year they released the record Trouble, which features reworks of Fats Waller, Henry Mancini and Sly Stone, among others. They’ve done a great job, with each rework made with limitless enthusiasm and with a postmodern twist every now and then.

Music Matters presents Bombyx

Home Grown is the venue par excellence to discover new and fresh jazz talents (with a refreshing beer)! The finest young and musical talents of Rotterdam and beyond get the opportunity to perform at BIRD to showcase their musical abilities. On Thursday, March 12th, the seven-headed band Bombyx will join us on stage.

An all-embracing, highly international program of various musical delights. 4 live sets: a celebrity visit of Haco accompanied by Tonic Train, lush electronica from Worm / Klangendum studio residents Sarah Phelan & Eva Bowan, surreal dream-pop from Beequeen, and deep Peruvian folkloric experimentalism from Tomás Tello.

Southbound is a pop project around vocalist, (song)writer and composer Roufaida Aboutaleb (20). Southbound is a crossover art project, as it features musical, lyrical and visual aspects. Debut single + video ‘Feathers’ is in stores worldwide starting February 2015.

Wednesday, March 4th: Filipe Monteiro Group Filipe Monteiro’s music is influenced by a mixture of different styles, folk, jazz, Brazilian music, musica gaucha (music originating from southern Brazil), rock and groove. Monteiro combines sophisticated rhythms with simplicity, which makes his music both original and accessible.

SKARUMBLE: Phoenix City Retaliators vs. The Downbeat Detonators

The Downbeat Detonators: With members that played in ska and reggae bands like Ollie Q and the Deep Six, Ska-D-Lite, the Regulators, Dreadless and acts like Klavan Gadje,TrenchcoaT which are bordering these genres, the Downbeat Detonators are armed to the teeth to demolish the ska-reggae scene with a dynamite reggae sound packed with organs, horns and the explosive riddims you would expect from this skanking squad of reggae veterans.

Subbacultcha! & Textuur present: Cult of Youth (US) + Blessum (NL)

Cult of Youth from Brooklyn play wayward indie with industrial and folk influences. They just released their new album Final Days on the high quality Sacred Bones imprint. Support is from Blessum (Keimpe Koldijk) who will give a one-time only live performance of this project, consisting of organ sounds, feedback and visuals.

A spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three masters of their magical instruments: Ney, Kora and Ud. With their roots in the ancient Ottoman, Anatolian, Balkan and West African music traditions, the trio welcomes you with its musical authenticity and hospitality. The original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and played in the character of chamber music. The Mehmet Polat Trio invites you on a sincere musical journey from the past to the future.

Radar Night met La Sra Tomasa + Los Paja Brava

Seven young boys from Barcelona setting the stage on fire with their wild mix of latin and dance. La Sra. Tomasa dares to mix up latin-american styles as timba and salsa with their own rumba catalana, adding substantial portions of reggae, funk and rap with a sound that relates to current electronic dance styles as drum & bass, dubstep and house. This fusion of styles leads to a repertoire that is always non-conventional, creative and highly danceable.

After years of performing and recording several albums with The Souldiers, the Dutch – New Zealand ensemble comprising Joost van Dyck, sister Cato van Dyck and New Zealand guitarist Daniel ‘Da Freez’ Johnston, embarked on a new journey and formed MY BABY in 2012.

Little Axe

Little Axe is the alter ego of Skip McDonald (Little Axe was born as Bernard Alexander on September 1, 1949 in Dayton, Ohio (USA). A class musician who makes exceptional music and Moby influenced audible on the album ‘Play’. It is difficult to describe, but perhaps the term ‘hi-tech gospel blues / dub’ will fit.
